Fantastic movie, Joaquin Phoenix gave an amazing performance, as did Amy Adams. Seriously go see this movie, I'll go again with you!
I mean just look at the movie poster itself, awesome.
I dragged my mom and sister to the independent film theatre, Angelika again and made them see the movie Her with me. It was one of the best movies I have seen in theaters in a really long time. It's one of those movies that leaves such lasting impression on you when you leave the theatre and makes you think for a while after. What is so weird about this film, is the fact that the actual story was my least favorite part. Basically, Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodore Twombly and falls in love with his computer. It's basically like he fell in love with a more updated Siri, who learns how to feel emotions. It's pretty weird but the movie was so beautiful. It was so insightful and actually made me tear up during the happy parts. The costume design was so perfect. All the women wore quirky clothes with fully buttoned up shirts, while the men wore extremely high-wasted pants. You can see the vivid colors Joaquin wears, always bright reds, sometimes with hints of orange, paired with grey and brown matching his awesome horn rimmed glasses. Big props to designer, Casey Storm. Casey Storm collaborated with brilliant cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema. This movie has really made me re-consider cinematography as a possible future.

Hi Hi Hi! I hope y'all had a fantastic Holiday, and good luck to everyone on NYE! My break has been pretty uneventful! I have basically watched tv, worked a couple shifts at Anthro (and spent double my paycheck), and saw a couple films! I don't have a lot of patience and when a movie comes out that I want to see. I can't seem to wait around until someone want to see it with me, so I just go by myself. I get a lot of crap from people for doing this but I DO NOT care! Going to the movies alone is the best! No one talks to you or distracts you from what's going on. All of my friends seem to be very ADD and vocal when we go to a movie, they are either texting (Kelly), talking (everyone), or obnoxiously chewing on huge smuggled sourdough pretzels so I can't even hear what's going on (ERIKA).
If you don't want to read all this: all these movies are good. My first film I saw this break was American Hustle. This film was not really what I expected. I enjoyed it overall but it was much too long for me being over two hours long, when I expected a nice 80 min. Jennifer Lawrence was great in it, not surprising but she did not have a large part in the film despite all the advertisements. Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper did as well as predicted. They are all fantastic actors and really deserve all the oscar buzz this film has been getting. Film two: I dragged my siblings to see a 10:30pm showing of Anchorman, when we stopped in Harrisonburg on our way to the Greenbrier. I have no problem seeing a movie that late due to my college sleep schedule, but Hagen wasn't too thrilled about going. The movie was absolutely hilarious. It was so bizarre and you can tell they literally just threw everything out the window, turned on the camera, and started filming whatever the hell they wanted. It was slightly long, but it makes up for it at the end with a scene too weird for words, but very funny. There is also a heavy list of cameos including: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jim Carey, Marion Cotillard, John C. Riley, Harrison Ford, Kanye West, Kirsten Dunst, Will Smith, and the beautiful Vince Vaughn. Also, Steve Carrel is so awesome and hilarious, he is a genius. Third film: The Wolf of Wall Street. Okay everyone is way too uptight about this movie! This movie was so awesome I could see it 100 more times! Everyone was talking about how disgusting, and inappropriate it was, but I don't see the big deal. It's rated R, so there's that reason not to take your whole family on Christmas Day. Also, its called research. I always look into the films I'm about to spend $11+ on before I go and see it! Read other viewers thoughts and if you think you're going to be offended, don't go. You can't get mad at a movie for depicting what was written in the book, and what actually happened. I thought the movie was fantastic and people who got so offended need to relax and not take it so seriously because its a great movie! 1/2 the theater walked out mid way. Whatever, they missed out because this movie was great. Martin Scorsese, is just the best there is, and the same goes for Leo and Jonah. GREAT MOVIE go and see it. Next Up: Inside Llewyn Davis and Her. I can't seem to drag myself out to the indie theatre, Angelika Film Center out in Fairfax to see these movies, I tell myself I am going to go every day but I just never get around to it! Its the type of theatre you want to go with someone, instead of going alone. But, I am dying to see these movies. I will probably cry through the entire film of Llewyn Davis film. The Coen brothers directed this, I love them more than anything (aka Big Lebowski). It also has John Goodman in it, who is an AMERICAN TREASURE according to Kevin Smith. He is right I am weirdly obsessed with John Goodman. Also, my boys Mumford and Sons did a lot of their soundtrack. So this is MADY in a movie. I feel like I want to write an entrée post on John Goodman, but there's already a lot of words in this post so far, and I don't think people care enough about what I have to say to read that much. If you want to join me in my Goodman obsession. WATCH: The Big Lebowski and Saturday Night Live. Also he was just on Jimmy Fallon Her is the movie starring Joaquin Phoenix also with Amy Adams, Kristin Wiig, Scarlet Johansson, and Rooney Mara. What drew me to this film was the gorgeous poster that is so dramatic and just pretty. I watched this video today about a photographer who had an awesome idea to get strangers to pose as close friends, family members, etc. It is such a cool idea and I'm thinking I might try it out! If you are ever bored, seriously check out this website because it has some really cute videos! And speaking of cool websites I also found this today, completely unrelated but… Firebox.com: The Coolest Things You Can Buy Here's an Update on some new movies I have seen! There haven't been that many recently because of school, but there have been a few that I need to share! 1. There Will Be Blood 2. The Piano 3. About Time 4. Promise Land There Will Be Blood is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. Daniel Day Lewis was unbelievable, you must take the time watch this fantastic movie! Seriously I can't get over how awesome this was.
About Time actually wasn't what I expected, I did not expect to be so moved by this film. I cried so much, and those of you who know me know that I'm am not a crier. A really cute movie that will definitely make you hate life and want to marry a tall, red-headed, british man. The Piano is definitely not for everyone. It is a beautiful movie, that takes a shocking turn. However, it is set in the 1850's, and is about a piano player... so I have a feeling it's not for everyone. But personally, I really loved it. The Promise Land was really boring, that's basically all I have to say. I was dissapointed that is was done by the director of Good Will Hunting, and had Matt Damon in it. I was just bored the entire time. I've been doing it forever, but the newest thing that everyone is finally admitting to doing is binge watching. My first experience was the O.C. and that started a deep obsession with finding new shows and watching every season in an unhealthy amount of time. If you don't have a Netflix account, it's probably for the best because your G.P.A. is definitely better than mine. But, otherwise, it is totally worth it. Here are some of my all-time favorite shows that, to be dramatic, have basically changed my life. I am currently watching The United States of Tara on Netflix and I can't stop! My next show: The Wire
Joel and Ethan Coen are two of my absolute favorite writers/directors. The two brothers have made some of the best movies, and I have a feeling their next one will be added to my list of favorites. One of my absolute favorite movies is The Big Lebowski. If you have not seen this movie, you are missing out, call me and you can come over and watch it anytime! They have a new movie coming out in December that looks like the perfect movie. the soundtrack just came out and I have not stopped listening to it, in the car, the shower, going to sleep, walking to class, it is so awesome. It is called, Inside Llewyn Davis, it's about a singer-songwriter who navigates New York's folk music scene in the 1960s. But, "The film doesn't really have a plot. That concerned us at one point; that's why we threw the cat in." It has Oscar Isaac, John Goodman, and Carrie Mulligan (who got Mumford and Sons to do the majority of the soundtrack). It won the Grand Prix at the 2103 Cannes Film Festival. Words cannot describe how excited I am to see this movie, written and directed by the best, and all about the type of music I love. For one of my Media Arts and Design Classes we had to find an experimental film, analyze it, and present it to the class. I had the best time doing this project, even though my group is the slacker group and we may have found this minutes before class (someone used the same video we found before)! I found this really cool video that I want everyone to take time to watch! If you struggle with ADD (like myself), at least skip around and look at the visual elements, there is no story line so you won't miss anything! I found this on a super cool website that you must check out! Short of the Week
I love movies. I love scary movies, funny movies, sad movies, artistic movies, stupid movies, you name it. However, I hate analyzing them, I just want to sit back, relax, and watch it. I can tell you if I liked it or not and will tell you whether or not it was a good film solely based on whether or not I was entertained. I am taking a couple of film classes where we analyze every single detail in a film. According to one of my professors analysis of The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's shoes are red to "represent menstruation." I'm sorry, but I have a feeling this is not what they were thinking when they put her in those ruby slippers. For those of you who viewed my last blog, I love sharing new films that I have seen recently, both good and bad. Here is the latest: 1. Days of Heaven (1978) : Boring as hell, but visually stunning!
2. Jules and Jim (1962): French film with subtitles, one of my new favorite movies! 3. Moonrise Kingdom (2012) : Love, Love, LOVE! 4. Chinatown (1974) : Classic Nicholson, great tribute to film noir! 5. Breathless (1960) : Another French film, highly recommend! 6. Taxi Driver (1976): I mean... De Niro + Scorsese, what else is there to say? 7. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013) : so stupid, yet unbelievably hilarious! |
